Principals Report April 2025
Welcome to Term 2. This is always a busy and exciting period of time in the school calendar. Our annual Cross Country or Fun Run is scheduled for Wednesday 30 April providing students with the opportunity to represent their house and engage with peers in a positive and supportive manner. We come together to show respect to our fallen forefathers through our ANZAC day ceremony and participation in the Jimboomba Anzac community march. Finally, on afternoon of Tuesday 6 May, we have the opportunity to welcome parents to school to partner with us in their students learning through our parent teacher interview meetings.
Learning Walks and Talks
As a school, we value student voice and perspective around their learning and the school community. There are several key spaces that have student representation that allow us to gain student voice in a formal way. This is through our School Council and our PBL committee. These groups gain student voice to influence the co-design of practices that positively influence our school culture as well as seek out and engage in opportunities to influence and impact our broader Flagstone community in a positive way. In terms of student learning, we seek opportunities for students to remain at the centre of their learning, engaging in reflection through Learning Walk and Talk conversations and for our senior students through Student Led Learning Conferences.
This term Heads of Department, School Leaders and Teachers will engaging in more in depth Learning Walks and Talks in Weeks 5-8. These will focus on opportunities for teachers and leaders to review alignment of assessment to instructional practice and reflect on the impact of these on student learning through structured discussions with students around their learning. This includes:
- Pre-walk review of curriculum and school curriculum planning documents
- Reviewing classroom learning walls and student learning artefacts.
- Asking students questions around their learning. The first walk will focus on the first 3 questions and the second will include all 5.
- What are you learning and why?
- How are you going?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where do you go for support?
- Post walk reflection and de-brief including reflective conversation with teacher around student voice to inform next steps in teaching and learning.
Year Co-ordinators, Heads of Department, Dp’s and myself engage in daily learning walks and talks that are more informal and include engagement with students asking them these questions around their learning.
P&C AGM
The P&C will be hosting its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 13 May. This meeting commences at 5:00pm in the School Administration Building. This meeting is an important opportunity for parents and citizens of our community with all executive positions including President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer available to be filled. Role descriptions are available on the school website under P&C.

NEWS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEAR 10, 11 & 12

Welcome back to term two. It promises to be an exciting and very busy term. I am excited to inform you that as well as continuing with the work in Year 11 and 12, I will also be the responsible DP for the Year 10 cohort. Added to that, Mrs Krause as HOD Senior Schooling will increase her role with the year 10s, and Mr Levi has taken over as Year 10 coordinator.
Term two will be a busy term for the year 10 cohort, as they start preparations for work experience which is being held in week 9. Mr Levi and I talked about the fact we want at least 90% of our year 10s looking to go to work experience during Week 9, and I have already had a lot of students discuss with me their interest in this. There will be preparation for work experience activities happening during the term, as we lead to work experience.
Year 11 and 12 students have settled into their prospective years. It has been pleasing, looking at results, that so many students have a really solid foundation through their first report card. This bodes well for a really good 2025. During term two we will be holding academic reviews again for these two year levels, and this will give the opportunity for parents, form teachers and students to review their progress. More details to come.
If you have any queries and are a parent of a year 10, 11 or 12 student, please email me on gcole6@eq.edu.au.

NEWS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEAR 8 & 9

Welcome back for our second term of 2025. We have had a change of leadership for our year levels. I will now be the Deputy for yr 8 and yr9 with Mr Coleman taking the reins with the year 10 students. Mr Sopher has had a change of year levels and is now the Year Co-ordinator for yr 8 and yr9 with Mr Tofae changing to the yr 10 Yr Co-ordinator role.
We have our first Parent Teacher interviews next Tuesday the 6th of May from 3:15 to 6pm. During this time parents can engage with information sessions regarding Q-parents and finance, Traineeships, Apprenticeships and work experience and our Student Code of Conduct review. The Parent teacher interviews will happen in our Science and Technology building and our students will have the coffee shop open for parents and visitors.
Our Student Code of Conduct is now in a review phase. I have met with student leaders and staff in the school to seek feedback on the SCC for the next 3 years. The SCC has been presented at a P&C meeting and there will be 2 opportunities for parents to give feedback on the behaviour processes at Flagstone State Community College. The first of these will be during the Parent teacher Interview afternoon on the 6th of May and the second will be an informal session on the 8th of May from 9am to 10am. Parents and Community members are welcome to attend either session and give feedback on the processes the College will use over the next 3 years.

NEWS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEAR 7

Welcome Back to Term 2!
I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Easter break.
As we begin a new term, there are a few updates to share. I will now be supporting our Year 7 students, while Mr. Tregea will be taking care of Years 8 and 9.
Our Year 7s are still finding their feet in high school life, and during the first two weeks of Term 2, teachers will be reinforcing school expectations and helping re-establish routines to set students up for success.
To start the term, our pedagogical focus is on using learning walls to support student understanding. Research shows that when students clearly understand what they are learning and why, they are far more likely to be engaged and motivated. You can support your child at home by regularly asking them what they’re learning in class and how they will be assessed—it’s a simple but powerful way to keep the learning conversation going beyond the classroom.
Reading is also a national focus for schools this year. Supporting reading at home can make a big difference. Encourage your child to read regularly and ensure they have access to age-appropriate reading materials. Joining a local library is a great way to do this, and many libraries also offer free apps that allow students to download eBooks onto phones or iPads—making it easier than ever to access books from anywhere.
As always, we encourage students to come to school prepared for class with their Big Four: laptop, diary, book, and pen. Being well-prepared helps students start the day with confidence and stay focused in class.
In Week 3, excitement is building as our students head off to camp on the Gold Coast. This trip has been eagerly anticipated by both students and staff. School camps are a fantastic opportunity for personal growth—students are exposed to new environments, encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, and often discover strengths they didn’t know they had. Camps also help to strengthen relationships, both among students and between students and staff.
Also in Week 3, we’ll be holding our parent-teacher interviews. These sessions are always well attended and provide a valuable chance to connect with your child’s teachers and gain insight into their academic progress.
I look forward to a productive term 2 working with your students.

UPDATE FROM OUR ENGAGMENT TEAM
It was a Happy Easter!
We had an egg-cellent lead-up to Easter last term, with three days full of fun and festive events, made even better by the amazing support from our school community.
To finish off Term 1, all students got involved in a whole-school Easter Egg Hunt—students searched high and low for hidden chocolate treats! On top of that, 20 cheeky Easter Bunny cut-outs were hidden around the school. Students who found and returned one to the Youth Support Workers were rewarded with either a chocolate gift box or a large chocolate bar, and with two major prize winners up for grabs!
Each year level also had the chance to win some sweet treats, with two chocolate bunnies raffled off per year level. Congratulations to all our lucky winners!
A huge thank you to our generous sponsors—Cr Natalie Willcocks, MP Charis Mullen, Flagstone Events, Woolworths, and Coles Flagstone—for helping to make these events possible.

Harmony Day: Embrace the Journey, Shape Our Future.
This year, Harmony Day was a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity, understanding, belonging, and connection across our school community.
In preparation for the day, we rolled up our sleeves and baked an incredible 200 choc chip and white chocolate muffins – a huge thank you to our amazing student helpers AJ and Summer, and the fabulous TA Anita. We couldn’t have done it without you! A special shout-out also to Natalie Sarca and Katie Sorensen for kindly letting us use a portion of their kitchens and all the ovens – your support made it all possible.
All 200 muffins were shared across different areas of the school, ensuring students from all year levels could enjoy a tasty treat as part of the celebrations.
The fantastic Wellbeing Student Team – Eden, Phoenix, Gabi, Tulip – also stepped up and hand-cranked 100 apple slinkies with Ange, which were handed out with smiles and spirit.
It was truly a wonderful event that brought students and staff together, building connection and community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this such a harmonious and eventful lunch.
Teamwork really does make the dream work!

Middle School Undercover Performance
In Week 9 of Term 1, we wrapped up the term with our Middle School Undercover Performance, featuring some amazing talent from our Senior Music students – Jemima, Leah, Awatif, and Jaydan. What a fantastic showcase of their hard work and musical talent!

Play-A-Thon
Our Instrumental Music program held its annual Play-a-thon – a vibrant evening where all our Instrumental Music students came together to rehearse for the upcoming Anzac Ceremony and strengthen friendships and teamwork across year levels. It was a wonderful mix of fun, collaboration, and, of course, music-making!
A big thank you to Mr Bahr, Mr Warnock, and Ms Tregea for their support on the night. And a special shout-out to Ms Collins and Mr Campbell for all their work behind the scenes in organising such a memorable event for our students.

Logan Instrumental Music Workshop
In Week 10 of Term 1, Jasmin, Ana, Matthew, Caitlin, and Alice attended the Logan Instrumental Music Workshop where they rehearsed and performed with other state schools. The students truly enjoyed the day!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
Honouring Service Through Song: Our Students Shine on Anzac Day
On Thursday 24 April our school community gathered in remembrance for our annual Anzac Day ceremony. This important event holds deep significance as we pay tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have served—and continue to serve—our country.
This year, the instrumental music students played a vital role in shaping the tone of the ceremony, and we could not be prouder of their efforts and professionalism. Their moving performances added both gravity and heart to the occasion, helping all in attendance reflect on the true meaning of Anzac Day.
From their rendition of Amazing Grace, Abide with Me, to heartfelt vocal performances and the respectful playing of the national anthem, our students demonstrated not only technical skill but also a deep understanding of the significance of this day. Special recognition to our Trumpet players Tiahme Langley, Ajay Evan, Charlize De La Cruz, Matthew Hall and Caitlin McDonald for their brave performance of The Last Post. Their dedication in the lead-up to the event— practice, attention to detail, and collaboration—did not go unnoticed.
Special thanks must go to teachers Mr Warnock, Mr Bahr, Miss Sung and Miss Tregae, who helped perform with our students on the day and Mr Campbell and Miss Eastman for their guidance.
We thank all our music students for their meaningful contributions to this ceremony. You’ve made the school community incredibly proud, and your performance truly honoured the Anzac spirit—Lest we forget.

NEWS FROM THE YEAR 11 AND YEAR 12 CO-ORDINATOR
Welcome back to Term Two! I hope you all had a happy and safe Easter break. It has been great to see many of our 11 and 12 students looking rested and refreshed after the break. Term One report cards were issued at the end of Term One. I encourage students and their families to take some time to reflect on their results and set some goals for this term. I would also strongly encourage students and their families to attend Parent Teacher interviews on the 6th of May to discuss Term One results and goals with their teachers.
As we begin Term Two, the cooler weather is starting to creep in – especially in the mornings. Flagstone State Community College is a uniform school and as such students are expected to meet set dress standards. These standards have been endorsed by the School’s Parents and Citizen’s Association. The Dress Standard is to be upheld by students whilst attending school, travelling to and from school, and when representing the school outside of school hours.
I was privileged to attend the Student Leadership Retreat with our Senior Leaders earlier this week. The Student Leaders ran activities and shared their vision for the year. I was very proud of the way the Year 12 Student Leaders conducted themselves over the three days and am looking forward to seeing their shared vision come to fruition this year.
The Year 11s have the opportunity to kick off Term Three with Year 11 Camp at Maranatha Recreation Camp - Tuchekoi, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Permission forms for this camp have been distributed to students in hard copy as well as emailed home to parents at the end of last term. Permission forms and payment are due by Friday the 13th of June (Week 8). Payment plans are able to be set up with the finance team if needed. Students wishing to nominate for Senior Leadership positions will need to be in attendance at this camp to be considered. Please don’t hesitate to reach out should you require forms or more information about camp. I am very much looking forward to spending the three days with our Year 11s in this beautiful location, for what is set to be a great camp.
Planning for the Year 12 Formal is in full swing. The Year 12 Formal will be held at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club on Thursday the 4th of September 2025, with arrivals from 5pm. More information will be forwarded to families as planning progresses. The Formal Committee will be running a Sausage Sizzle at the college on Saturday the 3rd of May on Election Day between 8am and 2pm, with proceeds going towards the Year 12 Formal.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.
