Assessment Literate Learners
Students at Flagstone SCC are encouraged to take ownership over their learning through the adoption of key strategies and practices in the classroom that give students the tools to identify and reflect upon what they are learning and why, and how they are going.
During our Learning Walks and Talks this past fortnight it has been wonderful to hear and see some of the excellent practices that support our students. These students are confident and passionate in talking about their learning and are motivated to do their best and continue to improve upon their present results.
In these classroom visits and walk throughs we saw and heard about Rainbow books in Maths, a warm up designed to switch brains on for learning and tap into prior knowledge around basic maths concepts and number skills, and finally a checking for understanding activity at the end. In English, students are engaging with exemplars and annotated word walls that are helping students comprehend texts and identify the key features of their written work that required to achieve success. In Humanities and Science key concept maps are core elements of the learning walls. We continue to progress and evolve these student centred learning walls so that students are able to confidently monitor and track their progress, and set meaningful goals for themselves as learners.
To support this work, we will continue to evolve how and when students engage with artefacts, in particular opportunities for peer and self level feedback.

NEWS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEAR 10, 11 & 12

ACADEMIC REVIEWS:
This past fortnight has been about academic reviews. Year 11 held their review on 13 May, and the 12s held theirs on 21 May.
The purpose has been to meet with form teachers and parents to identify how students are going and to seek extra support if needed. Feedback from our new form teachers has been that they have loved being part of this process and meeting the parents.
Year 12 students will have no more reviews, while year 11 reviews will occur again in early August. Please be part of this process to support your students.
YEAR 11 AND 12 CONCERNS:
I have had to have multiple conversations with female students in year 11 and 12 about being nice to each other. There have been multiple groups engaging in negative behaviours towards each other both at school, and outside (and then bringing it into school). After the year 12 conversation with the cohort two weeks ago, things have settled down. The year 11s heard from me as a cohort this week, and hopefully things will calm down there too. Please assist us by asking your student to focus on studies and not on their interactions with others.

NEWS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEAR 7

Our Year 7 students had an incredible time at camp last week, diving into a wide range of exciting activities. Both staff and students had an absolute ball, and I couldn't be prouder of how well our students represented Flagstone SCC. The feedback from staff has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting how well-mannered and respectful our students were – a real credit to our school community.
Many of our campers have returned with a stronger sense of belonging and deepened connections with both their peers and teachers, which is wonderful to see. I think it's safe to say that Year 7 Camp 2025 was a resounding success!
KEEPING UP THE LEARNING MOMENTUM
This term, our focus remains firmly on building strong reading skills and expanding vocabulary. Our dedicated teachers are working closely with students to ensure they have a solid grasp of any new terms needed for their current topics. This focus is crucial in helping students feel confident and prepared as they tackle new challenges.
READY TO LEARN – BIG 4
We always encourage our students to come to school Ready to Learn with their Big 4 – laptop, book, pen or pencil, and student diary. Being prepared means less time wasted at the start of lessons, more focused learning, and ultimately, better outcomes. Thank you for your ongoing support in helping your children stay organized and ready to learn.
MOBILE PHONE REMINDER
Just a quick reminder about our mobile phone policy – all phones should be turned off and Away for the Day from 9 am to 3 pm. If parents or guardians need to get in touch during school hours, or if students need to reach out, this can be done easily through the school office.
THIS WEEK’S FOCUS – ANCHOR CHARTS AND FIRST TIME, EVERY TIME
Our teaching focus this week is on Anchor Charts – these handy visual aids are created collaboratively by teachers and students and displayed in classrooms as quick reference guides. They help reinforce learning, support independent work, and reduce waiting time for teacher assistance.
Our behaviour focus this week is First Time, Every Time – a gentle but firm reminder that students are expected to follow instructions promptly, every time. This helps maintain a positive and productive learning environment for everyone.
As we approach the middle of Term 2, students will soon move into the consolidation phase of their learning, followed by assessments. This is a great time to engage with your children about what they’re learning. Regular conversations can help reinforce new ideas and boost their confidence, leading to better results overall.
Wishing you all a wonderful remainder of the term – let’s keep the momentum going!

DEMOCRACY SAUSAGE SIZZLE FUNDRAISER
On behalf of the Formal Committee, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported our recent Democracy Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser held on Election Day. Thanks to your generosity and community spirit, the event was a great success, raising valuable funds to support our upcoming Formal.
I would especially like to acknowledge and thank the following supporters for their generous contributions:

A special shout-out goes to our amazing Year 12 student helpers, and to Ms Natalie Sarca, Mr Levi Tofae, and Mrs Jenni Krause for kindly giving up their Saturday to help run the event and ensure everything went smoothly. Your support made a real difference, and we’re incredibly grateful to be part of such a generous and community-minded school.

YEAR 11 CAMP – A GREAT START TO TERM 3!
Our Year 11 students will have the opportunity to kick off Term 3 with a fantastic experience at Year 11 Camp, to be held at Maranatha Recreation Camp – Tuchekoi, nestled in the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
I would like to extend our sincere thanks to the following generous sponsors, whose support has helped reduce the cost of the camp for our Year 11 families:
- Natalie Willcocks, Councillor for Division 11, Logan City Council
- Charis Mullen MP, State Member for Jordan
- PEET Flagstone
Their contributions have gone a long way in making this enriching experience more accessible to all students.
Permission forms for the camp have been distributed to students in hard copy and also emailed to parents. Please note that permission forms and payment are due by Friday, 13th June (Week 8). If required, payment plans can be arranged through our Finance Team—please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Year 11 students are reminded that attendance at this camp is a requirement for those wishing to nominate for Senior Leadership positions. Should you have any questions or need another copy of the forms, please feel free to reach out. I am very much looking forward to spending three days with our Year 11s in such a beautiful setting—it's shaping up to be an unforgettable experience!

UNIFORM REMINDER – COOLER WEATHER APPROACHING!
As the cooler weather begins to set in—particularly in the mornings—we’d like to remind families that Flagstone State Community College is a uniform school, and all students are expected to follow our set dress standards. This includes wearing uniform-compliant jumpers and trackpants during the colder months. Non-uniform outerwear is not permitted, and students may be asked to remove items that do not meet the uniform policy.
We understand that, at times, families may face challenges in accessing uniform items or essential school equipment. If your child requires temporary uniform assistance, or if financial barriers exist, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you and can help make arrangements to ensure all students are comfortable, warm, and in full uniform.

Thank you for your ongoing support in maintaining the high standards and sense of belonging at our school.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.

UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SPORTS TECHNOLOGY
On Wednesday 7 May, Flagstone State Community College will be hosted the QUT Sports Tech Van, bringing an exciting, hands-on experience in sports science and technology directly to our students. As part of QUT’s innovative Sports Technology Outreach Program, the van offers interactive stations featuring the latest in sports analytics, wearable tech, virtual reality training, esports, reaction training tools, and more.
The experience was tailored for our Sport Development and Fitness students, providing strong links to their course content and future career pathways in sport, health, and technology. Activities such as the Force Decks, Oculus VR Sports, Virtual Cycling, and Blazepods Reaction Training gave students the chance to explore performance metrics, neuromuscular responses, and immersive virtual environments that bridge science and sport.
A big thank you to QUT for giving our student athletes a glimpse into the future of sport and science!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS – STAGE BAND REHEARSAL
This term the music block has been filled with energy as we have had our first Stage Band rehearsals for the year—and what a fantastic start it was!
With a mix of seasoned players and enthusiastic newcomers, our rehearsal room quickly filled with the sounds of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, drums, bass, and guitar. Our band members are exploring some funky new charts this year, as well as some old favourites.
The energy in the rehearsals is high with this year’s Stage Band promising to be something fun. With weekly after school rehearsals ahead, we are gearing up for a number of performances at school events, concert nights and performing at local community Markets.
A big shoutout to all our players for bringing such a positive attitude and strong commitment to our first few sessions and thanks to the parents and caregivers for their ongoing support of their musicians.
Stay tuned for upcoming gigs.

STEM DAY 2025
A DAY OF DISCOVERY AND FUN!
On Friday FSCC STEM Day was a huge success! Kicking off in the morning with a visit from the curious kindy kids of Goodstart Early Learning and Flagstone Early Learning. They used their exploring hands to dive into the world of STEM, followed by a fun and slightly explosive watermelon rubber band experiment, expertly demonstrated by Alice and Angle. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a well-earned icy pole thanks to the lovely ladies at the tuckshop.
Next, our enthusiastic FSS Year 5 and 6’s joined the fun, engaging with all the STEM activities – such as Lego robotics and making sherbet, before being wowed by an oobleck demonstration and hands-on session led by Matt and Cooper—it was messy, magical, and full of learning!
To wrap up the day, we were honoured to welcome our parents and community, along with special guest Natalie Willcocks, Logan’s Councillor for Division 11, where we were able to demonstrate and explain our knowledge of STEM. Summer and AJ amazed the crowd with the Van de Graaff machine, showing off the shocking side of science!
It was an exciting day of hands-on exploration and community connection, proudly showcasing all the amazing things our school is doing in STEM!

YEAR 10 MEDIA NEWS
Image warning: contains fake wounds.
Today the Yr10 Media class got into the special FX equipment to prep for filming. We’re currently in the middle of a unit called Attack of the B-Grade Film, where the students must film their own tacky and over the top film, either a sci-fi or a horror. This week we are focusing on special FX to show the kids what they have access to, to help them enhance their films. Today we were doing simple cuts, but next lesson we may get into bruises, scars and prosthetics. The next project will be all about props and how you can make a prop with the items around you, as long as you have glue and tape. We will attempt to make an alien, swords, guns and maybe masks too. Watch this space for more updates and hopefully by the end of the term, some amazingly, terrible, fantastic and crazy films.

BEYOND THE BRONCOS NEWS
Friday the 9th the Beyond the Broncos Girls Academy had a special visit from NRLW player Gayle Broughton and former NRL star Darius Boyd for our Term 2 workshop.

This term’s theme centred around NAIDOC: Strength, Vision, and Legacy. Gayle and Darius shared a powerful PowerPoint presentation with the girls, highlighting the importance of storytelling and how leaving a legacy can inspire and uplift the next generation.
These workshops are designed to empower the girls and support them on their journey. They aim to inspire, build confidence, and provide practical tools to help the girls achieve their goals in school, career, health, and well-being.
One of the key activities in term 2 work shop involved identifying personal values. Each girl selected words that resonated with them—words like love, kindness, courage, honesty, respect, individuality, and community. It was so deadly to witness our young tiddas recognising the strength they already carry within themselves. I was incredibly proud of them.
Thanks to the continued support from the Broncos, these workshops help the girls focus on setting goals, strengthening family and community connections, supporting others, and making a positive impact in all areas of their lives.

MEDIA MOVIEWORLD EXCURSION
On Monday the 28th of April, three Media classes went to Movie World on the Gold Coast. Mrs Morris’s Yr10 Media, Yr11 MAP and Mr Rogers Yr12 MAP classes all went along to Movie World to participate in an educational workshop called Creating a Nightmare. During the program, the students gained an exclusive look at the Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production process that went into creating Warner Bros. Movie World’s 2016 Fright Nights The Conjuring Maze Commercial. This multimodal experience will demonstrate to students how industry professionals enhance Media Arts end products through use of makeup, props, sets, special effects and camera techniques. After that we explored the theme park and went on rides of course. It was a lovely day and thank you to all who helped with the process in making it happen, and to Clair Reer and Paul Rogers for coming along.
